Entre le bœuf et l’âne gris

One of the oldest extant Christmas carols, the French “entre le bœuf et l’âne gris” (which translates to “between the ox and the grey ass”) dates to the middle ages. This easy version for small harp is the perfect addition to any harpist’s Holiday repertoire.

Carol of the Bells

This beautiful arrangement of the popular Christmas song “Carol of the Bells” is sure to please! Written by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914, it was first heard in the States during the Great Depression. It is easily recognized due to the four repeated notes that make up much of the piece.

The Wexford Carol

This download includes two versions of The Wexford Carol, one for a large harp, and a transposed and lightly edited version suitable for therapy harp. A traditional Irish carol, it re-entered the repertoire due to the efforts of William Grattan Flood (1859-1928), organist at at St. Aidan’s Cathedral in Enniscorthy. More recently, it was popularized by Loreena McKennitt. Set simply to accommodate the necessary (and easy) lever changes, this upbeat carol, it is sure to be a hit this Holiday season!

English Carol Medley

This English Carol Medley includes the songs “Let All Who Are to Mirth Inclined” and “Sweet Was the Song the Virgin Sang”. The first was made popular by Loreena McKennitt, the Canadian singer, songwriter, and harpist. Each is set simply to accommodate the necessary lever changes, which are easy to accomplish. These unusual carols are meditative and beautiful, perfect for special occasions.

Lich’vod Hachanukah

Lich’vod Hachanukah is a traditional Jewish song for Hanukah; the title means “In Honor Of Hanukah”. The traditional folk tune was popularized with words written in Hebrew by Israel’s national poet, Chaim Nachman Bialik.  The Hebrew words describe the lighting of the candles and making of traditional Hachanukah foods, asking, “do you know what it’s for?”  With its lilting and haunting melody with swirling accompaniment and (optional) harmonics is a lovely addition to your holiday harp repertoire.

The Little Drummer Boy

The Little Drummer Boy is an American Christmas carol by Katherine Kennicott Davis. The version popular today was influenced by Harry Simeone and Henry Onorati. The lyrics tell the story of a poor boy, who without a material gift to present to baby Jesus, gave him the gift of music. Open hand octaves simulate the drumbeat that the little boy brings to the child in the manger.

Jezebel Carol

The Jezebel Carol, or Carval Ny Drogh Vranne, is a traditional carol from the Isle of Man. A beautiful minor carol, set simply with parallel harmonies and ringing, rolled chords, it is perfect for candle light services, Christmas meditation services, or midnight mass.

O Holy Night

O Holy Night, or Cantique de Noël, is a French carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847. It was written to commemorate the new organ in the town of Roquemaure. The text tells of Jesus’s birth, and humanity’s redemption. One of the most popular carols, this version is especially arranged for those who aren’t ready for the difficulty of the original, but still want the sound of a lovely arpeggio accompaniment.

In the Bleak Midwinter

In the Bleak Midwinter is a beautiful English carol, with words by Christina Rossetti and music by Gustav Holst. Written in 1906, it is a favorite among musicians and audiences in both England and the United States. This arrangement includes a delicately simple verse followed by a second verse lightly colored with cluster chords and suspensions.
